Video: The Search | | To listen to a good number of conservatives, Mitt Romney is evil personified. Well, here’s a guy who would disagree. I almost teared up when I read the story at Ace of Spades. The video is actually from Romney’s 2008 campaign. I wonder if he’ll be using it this time around. I would if I were him, it’s a pretty powerful positive message. Romney may not be your pick in the GOP primary – I’m still undecided, but I know who I won’t be voting for – but he does seem to be a genuinely decent person. In related news, Romney released more details on his tax plan today. (No wonder Obama came out with his own tax plan this morning.) It’s not especially bold, but I do like the part about bringing some certainty when it comes to taxes and puts an end to these temporary tax breaks. The Wall Street Journal summarized the plan, if you’re looking for more information. If you’re still undecided, there’s another debate tonight at 8:00 ET on CNN. It should be interesting, I just hope they don’t get all caught up in things like what Rick Santorum said in 2008 at a church. [...] | | 2/22/2012 7:22:01 PM |
Where Did the Light Go at LightSquared? | | The following is a guest post by Joseph Hall. *** Where Did the Light Go at LightSquared? LightSquared, the company formally known as SkyTerra Communications Inc, has experienced the heights of infamy, the breadth of investments, and the swift fall from grace as a car plunging from a cliff. Once considered the rising star of digital communication, LightSquared promised to deliver lightening fast, G4+, data acquisition speeds to meet increasing customer demand for Internet access. Billions of dollars later the promises have faded and the program is entering the dark regions of failed investments. Bloomberg reported on February 15, 2012, that the FCC has withdrawn its support from the project due to a White House report that revealed that the frequency spectrum used by LightSquared and the signal strength used produces significant interference with GPS devices used in the private sector as well as commercial and military applications. In the article, “LightSquared to Be Blocked by U.S. on Interference Report,” includes the interplay between LightSquared and the FCC: “LightSquared (SKYT) said yesterday it disagreed with Strickling’s findings. The NTIA and the advisory board that informed its decision “disregard more than a decade of regulatory orders, and in doing so, jeopardize [...] | | 2/22/2012 6:35:28 PM |
Remember the Good Old Days of $3.05 per Gallon Gasoline? | | Verum Serum dug up an old Obama quote on gas prices. In 2006 he said there would come “a day when we look back at that $3.05 or $3.15 gasoline as the good old days.” He went on to lay out his plan for avoiding such a fate – pretty much everything he’s done in the past three years. How’s that going for us? What doesn’t make sense, at least to any sane person, is why the Democrats aren’t out there cheering today’s high gas prices. It’s pretty much what they all want. So why aren’t Democrats making the case that the spike in prices is a good thing? Isn’t this basically our energy policy these days? How we “win the future”? If high energy prices were to damage President Barack Obama’s re-election prospects, it would be ironic, considering the left has been telling us to set aside our “dependency” — or, as our most recent Republican president put it, “addiction” — for a long time. If Democrats had their way, after all, we would be enjoying the economic results of cap-and-trade policy these days — a program designed to increase the cost of energy by creating false demand in a fabricated [...] | | 2/22/2012 5:40:59 PM |
Public Service Announcement from Zilla to Bloggers | | Regular readers probably remember the guy who offered to “help” me a day or two after I broke my wrist and was in quite a bit of pain. It turned out to be a huge embarrassment for me, and some of you were rightly offended by the guy. It turns out there was a great deal I didn’t know about “Pat in Michigan,” and had I known his history I never would have taken him up on his offer. Apparently, he’s been around the blogosphere for about a decade, spewing hate and vitriol at every turn, and he’s still at it. So Zilla is warning bloggers that this guy is out there. Here is audio of “Patrick” attempting to justify the disgusting things he said, it is rambling, incoherent, and filled with cursing, and then at one point, he starts speaking ebonics, go figure: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=451_1197545228 More recently, he trolled the comments section at Althouse and called Ann Althouse a “dumb twat” and said he was “proud” to have said it. He apparently cannot get along with anybody for very long, as evidenced by a screed he left at a multi-contributor blog called Alexandria in which he mistook a male target of his rage for [...] | | 2/22/2012 5:03:40 PM |
WH Adviser Valerie Jarrett: Unemployment Stimulates the Economy | | Senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett (AKA Obama’s Brain) spoke at an event in North Carolina and said that unemployment is great for the economy, and that keeping people on the government dole is good for the family. “Even though we had a terrible economic crisis three years ago, throughout our country many people were suffering before the last three years, particularly in the black community,” Jarrett said. “And so we need to make sure that we continue to support that important safety net. It not only is good for the family, but it’s good for the economy. People who receive that unemployment check go out and spend it and help stimulate the economy, so that’s healthy as well.” This is getting so old. It’s not even fun mocking these people anymore. Good grief. Watch: Via The Weekly Standard Tweetvaso link | | 2/22/2012 2:24:51 PM |
Tax Revenues Dropped After British Top Tax Rate Increased to 50% | | Democrats here in the US insist that higher tax rates mean higher revenues to the Treasury. Time and again they’re proven wrong, but that doesn’t stop them from repeating the lie. Today all we have to do is look to our friends across the pond for more proof that increasing taxes on the rich means decreased revenue to the government. The Treasury received £10.35 billion in income tax payments from those paying by self-assessment last month, a drop of £509 million compared with January 2011. Most other taxes produced higher revenues over the same period. Senior sources said that the first official figures indicated that there had been “manoeuvring” by well-off Britons to avoid the new higher rate. The figures will add to pressure on the Coalition to drop the levy amid fears it is forcing entrepreneurs to relocate abroad. Read the whole thing. Tweetvaso link | | 2/22/2012 2:18:20 PM |
How Obama Buys Votes for Unpopular Legislation | | The Heritage Foundation’s Lachlan Markay dug into government records and found a huge spike in earmarks granted to members of Congress around the time of votes on major pieces of legislation. He did note that the practice of giving grants to legislators in exchange for votes isn’t highly unusual (but it should be), but President Obama has done this far more than any other president. Administrative earmarking refers to the federal government’s allocation of funds from its discretionary budget for specific projects. The practice is less transparent than legislative earmarking, since, according to the Congressional Research Service, “[t]here is no source that defines and comprehensively identifies Administrative earmarks.” But an analysis of grants from agencies during the early years of the Obama administration shows that the districts of moderate Democrats, whose support was so crucial for Obama during the 111th Congress, received large sums right around the passage of three key pieces of legislation: Obamacare, Dodd-Frank financial regulations, and the cap-and-trade bill. During the run-up to votes in the House of Representatives for each of those pieces of legislation, the rate of administrative earmarking spiked. This chart shows the number of grants requested by 12 federal agencies, as documented at [...] | | 2/22/2012 1:40:00 PM |
Chris Christie to Warren Buffett: Just Shut Up and Write a Check | | Chris Christie appeared on the Piers Morgan show and the topic turned to Warren Buffett’s calls for higher taxes on the wealthy. Christie was having none of it, and said Buffett should just “write a check and shut up.” “He should just write a check and shut up,” Christie said Tuesday on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight.” “Really, and just contribute. The fact of the matter is that I’m tired of hearing about it. If he wants to give the government more money, he’s got the ability to write a check — go ahead and write it. “I’m so tired of talking about Warren Buffett,” Christie said, interrupting Morgan. “What are you going to bring up next, his secretary? I mean, this is the old song.” “You haven’t even heard the question,” Morgan exclaimed. “I know the question,” Christie replied. “Do you really think Warren Buffett needs as much attention from the government as the most vulnerable … since I got the question right, I’m not answering the question, how about that. That’s my gift for getting the question right.” Christie also said the tax code should be fair to everyone. Obama Wants 28% Corporate Tax, Higher Taxes on Oil and Gas Companies, and Huge Hike to Tax on Dividends | | The big news today is that President Obama is going to propose reducing the corporate tax rate to 28%, which is still higher than the average of other nations. He wants to be seen as a tax cutter leading up to the next election. But you know there’s a catch, there always is with Obama. In his proposed rewrite, Obama will target oil and gas companies for tax hikes while promising special breaks for manufacturing companies, according to a senior administration official. Gee, who would the oil and gas companies pass those higher taxes along to? Could it be consumers? But as William Teach pointed out, it’s all about keeping the unions and the greenies happy. Obama also wants to drastically increase the dividend tax rate to 39.6%. Currently dividends are taxed at the same rate as capital gains – 15%. The Wall Street Journal notes that a dividend tax hike will hurt the middle class and retirees especially hard. If you reverse the policy, you reverse the incentives. The tripling of the dividend tax will have a dampening effect on these payments. Who would get hurt? IRS data show that retirees and near-retirees who depend on dividend income would [...] | | 2/22/2012 12:07:33 PM |
OWS Supporter Wants to Storm Wall Street with Guns Ablazing | | Via Big Government, an OWS supporter’s rant got posted in USA Today. Lefties just love the Second Amendment when it suits their purposes. USA TODAY’s editorial is right to say that Occupy might lack clear goals on how to move forward, but the movement has accomplished its main original goal: to protest these injustices, not by simply holding a rally and going home, but by keeping the rally going to underscore the seriousness of this problem. Your piece accuses the protesters of sitting around and doing nothing. So maybe they should take up their Second Amendment-sanctioned guns and storm Wall Street and our nation’s capitals. If our country doesn’t change, it could very well come to that one day. Well, isn’t that civil? Tweetvaso link | | 2/22/2012 1:17:41 AM |
Hugo Chavez Went Back to Cuba for Cancer Treatment | | Venezuela’s crazy dictator Hugo Chavez went back to Cuba for cancer treatment. Reportedly, they found a new lesion or tumor of some sort and his doctors are debating what treatment to try next. It was also reported that he’s been taking steroids to maintain an appearance of good health. I don’t think the roids will help his mental state. Hugo Chávez confirmed Tuesday that he traveled to Cuba for medical tests, where doctors found a new lesion that will require surgery to remove. “The test in Havana found a lesion in the same spot where the other tumor was removed one year ago,” Chávez said on state television. The left-wing Venezuelan president traveled to Cuba over the weekend without notifying the public, fueling speculation about his health. Chávez reappeared on Tuesday, when state television broadcast his visit to the Veneminsk tractor factory in the Venezuelan state of Barinas. (Read More) Tweetvaso link | | 2/21/2012 10:31:49 PM |
Rep. John Conyers Blighted Property Sent Neighbor’s Insurance Premiums Sky High | | I’m glad I’m not one of John Conyers’s neighbors. A property he owned with his wife, and transferred to relatives after she was sent to the pokey, is so blighted the next door neighbor’s property tax bill skyrocketed. My Fox Detroit reported: Remember when we told you about the blighted property Congressman John Conyers owns on Detroit’s east side? You know the one. The fallin’ down, peelin’ back, pile o’dump that looked like it was reverting back to nature? It’s winter time now, and all those wild greens have died and fallen to the ground. It might look better to some, but not to the neighbor next door who’s now being forced to shell out her own green. According to her, er yearly homeowners insurance jumped from $1,700 – to $7,000! What in the world could have caused that? “They raised it because of the abandoned house next door. They said my house is now being rated up because of the risk of the house next door catching on fire,” she said. (Read More) Watch the video, Conyers seemed quite aggravated that a reporter was asking him about his abandoned property. He said he would pay the neighbor’s bill, but [...] | | 2/21/2012 9:28:09 PM |
Americans Haven’t Been This Pessimistic Since Jimmy Carter | | According to US News Americans haven’t been this pessimistic since Jimmy Carter was president. It’s February, nine months before a presidential election, and only 22 percent of Americans say they are satisfied with the way things are going. Voters haven’t been this unhappy with the country since George H.W. Bush’s presidency, when only 21 percent of Americans reported being happy with the country’s direction. And before that, the lowest approval rating was 19 percent during Jimmy Carter’s first term. What do the two presidencies have in common? Neither of them won re-election. And, if the trends holds true, Obama looks to be in an equally precarious situation. Maybe Obama will deliver the equivalent of a “malaise” speech, or he could just keep urging us to strive for mediocrity. Now, I know a lot of the polls lately show Obama doing pretty well. Not to worry, Don Surber used his way-back machine to look at polls from races past. President Obama’s leads of 5.7% to 13.9% over each candidate do not scare me. In fact, they are rather puny. At this point 8 years ago this month, John Kerry was ahead of Bush by 12 points in the Gallup Poll: 55%-43%. And [...] | | 2/21/2012 9:19:32 PM |
Sigh | | I don’t even know what to say about this. Better to get it out now, I guess. “Satan has his sights on the United States of America!” Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum has declared. “Satan is attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity, and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that has so deeply rooted in the American tradition.” Not that I entirely disagree with the premise that we have a problem with our culture. But I just don’t know how this will fly with the average voter. Rush Limbaugh weighed in, comparing the reaction to these statements made by Santorum a few years ago to how Hugo Chavez calling George W. Bush “Satan” was received by the media. I don’t know if that really helps matters. Allahupundit has more. For some reason this reminds me of Dana Carvey as the Church Lady. Update: Linked by Politico – thanks! The predictable aftermath of the anti-CAP smear | | I’ve written several times about the coordinated smear campaign to brand writers at the Center for American Progress as “anti-Semites” in order to punish them for defying mandated orthodoxies on Israel and to deter others from doing so. While that smear campaign, having done its job, is now winding down, the predictable effects of it are only beginning: CAP is now censoring those targeted writers, and those who defended them are now being similarly smeared. | | 2/22/2012 7:11:17 PM |
