Rampart / **** (R)
"Rampart" (R, 112 minutes). A powerful, frightening performance by Woody Harrelson, as a bad cop, circa 1999, in the most corrupt police district in Los Angeles. He's isn't part of the team there; he's stand-alone, a loner who seems to have evil inborn as part of his nature. As he beats a suspect and is caught on videotape, his usual rat like instincts for escape fail him, and he begins to rot from within. One of Harrelson's best performances. Four stars
2/15/2012 10:29:00 PM

London River / *** (Unrated)
"London River" (Unrated, 87 minutes). The story of a widow from the island of Guernsey and an African from France who journey to London in search of their children in the aftermath of the 2005 terrorist bombings of underground trains and a bus. Were they victims? Were they even terrorists? As these two people cross paths, they make surprising discoveries about their children and themselves. Touching and very well-acted by Brenda Blethyn and Sotigui Kouyaté. Directed by Rachid Bouchareb. Three stars
2/15/2012 10:28:00 PM

Declaration of War / *** (Unrated)
"Declaration of War" (Unrated, 100 minutes). Their names are Romeo and Juliet. They live in Paris. They have baby boy Adam. He isn't an easy baby. They discover when he is 18 months old that he has a large, dangerous brain tumor. This fact consumes their lives and destroys their relationship. But the film isn't entirely a depressing dirge, and ha moments of fun and fancy, and a lively visual style. Finalist for best foreign film in the 2012 Oscars. Three stars
2/15/2012 9:38:00 PM

This Means War / *1/2 (PG-13)
"This Means War" (PG-13, 97 minutes). As stupid action comedies go, this one scales and heights of inanity. Reese Witherspoon plays a Los Angeles cutie who meets two men (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) through an online dating service, ad it turns out they're best buddies who both work for the CIA. Engaged in a romantic struggle for her charms, they use high-tech electronic surveillance to spy on her most private moments--including her dates with both of them--which they sometimes watch together. How creepy is that? The plot gimmick might work in a stupid teenage comedy, but the average age of the actors in this movie is 33.66. That's old enough for their agents to know better. One and a half stars
2/15/2012 9:32:00 PM

In Darkness / **1/2 (R)
"In Darkness" (R, 143 minutes). A garbageman in Lvov takes advantage of the Nazi occupation of his city to make profits by selling food and supplies to a small group of Jews hiding in the sewers. But after witnessing unspeakable Nazi atrocities, his original anti-Semitism gives way to a genuine desire to save their lives. A righteous story of conversion, but told in a film too long and repetitious, with dimly-lit sewer scenes that are an ordeal to wait through. Two and a half stars
2/15/2012 9:09:00 PM

House of Pleasures / ***1/2 (Unrated)
"House of Pleasures" (Adults, 125 minutes). A morose elegy to the decline of a luxurious Parisian bordello, a closed world in which prostitutes and their clients glide like sleep-walkers through the motions of sex. In a high-priced whorehouse on a respectable boulevard, a madam and her women of commerce lead a life as cloistered as in a convent, or a prison. It is all very quiet and sad. Three and a half stars
2/8/2012 10:49:00 PM

W.E. / **1/2 (R)
"W.E." (R, 119 minutes). Madonna's film tells two parallel stories, one about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the other set years later about a rich Manhattan woman who is fascinated by her. These two women transcend time and space to speak with one another, but their relationship and their characters are an enigma. This is an elegant, ambitious and deliberately monotonous film, about a couple who were trapped for life within the monstrous fact of his decision to renounce the throne of the British Empire to "marry the woman I love." You won't discover here what they saw in one another. Two and a half stars
2/8/2012 9:56:00 PM

Journey 2: Mysterious Island / **1/2 (PG)
"Journey 2: Mysterious Island" (PG, 94 minutes). A transcendently goofy boy's own adventure tale, with young Josh Hutcherson and his mom's boyfriend (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) rescuing his grandfather (Michael Caine) from a lost island in the South Pacific, after teaming up with a helicopter pilot (Luis Guzman) and his sultry daughter (Vanessa Hudgens). With elephants the size of dogs, lizards the size of dinosaurs, bees so big you can ride them bareback, an exploding volcano, the lost city of Atlantic, Captain Nemo's submarine Nautilis, and The Rock performing "It's a Wonderful World" with a ukulele. It's even in 3D. I'm exhausted just describing it. Fun in the 1960s Disney adventure movie way. Two and a half stars
2/8/2012 9:47:00 PM

The Vow / **1/2 (PG-13)
"The Vow" (PG-13, 104 minutes). Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum play a young Chicago couple who are happily married after four years when they're in an accident and he loses all her memories of being married to him--or even meeting him. She thinks she's still living at home with her parents (Sam Neill and Jessica Lange), and engaged to Jeremy (Scott Speedman). What's a girl to do? A well-behaved, tender-hearted date movie about impossibly nice people, but too sedate and safe. Two and a half stars
2/8/2012 4:36:00 PM

Oscar nominated short docs / *** (Unrated)
"Oscar nominated short docs" (Unrated). Four of these five nominees will play once daily this weekend and then Feb. 20-22 at the Music Box. It's part of the academy's recent program of finding venues for shorts, which may win Oscars but can rarely find audiences. Considering that they were selected from a long list of finalists, you can be confident these will all be wonderful. Three stars
2/8/2012 1:49:00 PM

Addiction Incorporated / *** (PG)
"Addiction Incorporated" (PG, 100 minutes). Effective, entertaining and righteous: A documentary centering on Victor DeNoble, a scientist for Philip Morris whose research proved that nicotine was addictive and that the tobacco industry knew it was. This set in motion a historic setback for big Tobacco. Three stars
2/8/2012 1:10:00 AM

Windfall / *** (Unrated)
"Windfall" (Unrated, 83 minutes). A dismaying documentary that convincingly argues that that "wind farms" and their turbines (400 feet tall, weighing 600,000 pounds) are a hazard to the environment, create relentless low-frequency noise that effect mental health, slaughter birds and bats, and may use more energy than they produce. I thought wind energy was something I could believe in. This film suggests it's just another corporate flim-flam game. Three stars
2/1/2012 9:24:00 PM

The Woman in Black / *** (PG-13)
"The Woman in Black" (PG-13, 95 minutes). A stylish and creepy ghost story set in a crumbling mansion in the north of England, which is haunted by the spirit of a woman who mourns her lost child. A young attorney (Daniel Radcliffe) journeys there to search through her moldering papers, and because he needs the work refuses to be frightened away by the shrieks and shadows within the decrepit walls. In his first film since the Harry Potter series ended, Radcliffe still seems school boyish, but the stars of the film are the production design and cacophonous sound effects. Scary, sorta. Nice to look at. Three stars
2/1/2012 9:01:00 PM

Coriolanus / ***1/2 (R)
"Coriolanus" (R, 122 minutes). Ralph Fiennes stars in and directs Shakespeare's tragedy about a general whose scorn for the people causes him to turn against his own side and join forced with the enemy against it. A modern dress action film set against a backdrop that could be Bosnia. Well acted, admirable, but the violence and the language are an uneasy fit. Also wit Vanessa Redgrave, Gerald Butler, Brian Cox and Jessica Chastain. Three and a half stars
2/1/2012 8:43:00 PM

Chronicle / ***1/2 (PG-13)
"Chronicle" (PG-13, 83 minutes). Three high school students find a hole in the middle of a gloomy grassy field, climb down, encounter a strange crystalline object and find themselves with such superpowers as telekinesis. But this isn't a typical sci-fi movie; as acted by Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell and Michael B. Jordan, they have a surprising realism as their powers take on new dimensions and one of them begins to act out his inner rage. An uncommonly original and entertaining film by talents in their early and mid-twenties; the directing debut of Josh Trank, with an accomplished screenplay by Max Landis. Three and a half stars
2/1/2012 8:38:00 PM

The Innkeepers / *** (R)
"The Innkeepers" (R, 100 minutes). Two young part-timers (Sara Paxton and Pat Healy) are working as the night staff at a Connecticut inn which is schedule to close in a few days. Only two rooms are occupied in addition to their own. To pass the time, they hope to capture video evidence that the inn is haunted. Writer-director Ti West ("The House of the Devil") does a good job of crafting quiet suspense and slowly building mystery. Three stars
2/1/2012 3:11:00 PM

Great Movie: Smiles of a Summer Night (1955)
Adultery was the great subject of many of Ingmar Bergman's films and much of his life. He was married five times, and not very faithfully, because he also had fairly public relationships with the actresses Harriet Andersson, Bibi Andersson and Liv Ullmann, and was married during all of those affairs. He was far from a libertine, experienced a great deal of guilt during his liaisons, and returned to the subject repeatedly in his films. He wrote "Sunday's Children" (1994), directed by his son Daniel, about how Bergman's clergyman father created a household where public piety was joined with private anguish. "Private Confessions" (1996), his screenplay directed by Liv Ullmann, was about his mother's moral struggles.
1/31/2012 7:58:00 PM

We Need to Talk about Kevin / **** (R)
“We Need to Talk About Kevin" (R, 111 minutes). Tilda Swinton in a raw and courageous performance as a woman whose psychopathic son has driven her over the edge. Kevin (Ezra Miller and Jasper Newell) hates her and knows exactly what buttons to push. Her husband (John C. Reilly) is benign to the point of cluelessness. She is the wrong person in the wrong life with the wrong child. Directed by Lynne Ramsay. Four stars
1/25/2012 11:43:00 PM

Amador / ** (Unrated)
"Amador" (Unrated, 112 minutes). Marcela Magaly Solier, a poor woman in Madrid, takes a job as the daytime companion of Amador (Celso Bugallo), an old man who spends his remaining days working on jigsaw puzzles. Gradually, quietly, they share some truths about life. Here is a lovely idea for a film, sidetracked by a central performance that is too maddeningly passive; there are too many overlong shots of Solier's warm face as she takes too long to arrive at fairly obvious conclusions. Written and directed by Fernando León de Aranoa. Two stars
1/25/2012 10:07:00 PM

A Separation / **** (PG-13)
"A Separation" (PG-13, 123 minutes). A happily married middle-class couple in Tehran, have a sweet 11-year-old daughter Termeh, and his senile father also lives with them. They have agreed in principle to move abroad, where they hope their daughter's prospects might be better. She wants to lave now; he wants to stay because of his father. A wonderfully written and acted, very human story, then ends in a courtroom. I decent characters are all trying to do the right thing. To untangle right and wrong in this fascinating story is a moral challenge. The best film of 2011. Four stars
